So often we let the opinions of others dictate the way we live; valuing their thoughts more than our own even if it wasn't the truth. What we don't realize is that when you are blessed with the attention and love from everyone around you, and when someone we know is seeking the attention or love that we receive, they often result in actions that devalues, tarnishes and discredits you in order to attract the attention their way.

Though it's sad to see that people who are insecure, low in self-esteem and lonely often act in unloving ways in order to be loved, it's even sadder to see someone beating themselves up over the opinions that others have on them.

There was a time not too long ago that CG and I, fell victim to someone who lacked love and attention in his life. We remember doing everything we can to help that person gain confidence, love and support; showering him with kindness, encuragement and care just so that he felt safe and secure. However what we didn't realize was that in the midst of all the care that we were giving him, he was secretly tearing down our reputation and business to those who were close to us to a point the bubble burst.

People that once believed in us, ignored and avoided us to the extend we felt like strangers. We started losing friends, customers and even workers from the manipulation and deceits that he was secretly scheming behind our backs. As rumours about us started to spread, our lives began to fall apart bit by bit, to the extend we asked ourselves, what have we done so wrong to deserve this?

However, the real problem wasn't about all the horrible things that people said about us; rather it was how we allowed those words, be it true or untrue, to penetrate our lives and alter our belief systems...

Like Joseph Goebbels once said, "If you tell a lie long enough, people will start believing it; and soon you will start to believe it too..."

We unconsciously allowed the opinion of others to determine our self-worth. We allowed those who didn't deserve our love, a place in our hearts just because we were afraid of hurting them even more; when in reality, it was the exact opposite...

They say that the greatest challenges in life often bears fruit to the most powerful change. Though we tried to hide our pain and suffering as much as we could in hopes of moving on, life kept sending people our way to remind us of these horrible events. Every now and then, there would be someone poking about him in our life, trying to indirectly ask us questions pertaining to the situation to the extend we decided that 'ENOUGH WAS ENOUGH'. We needed to put this situation to rest and move forward.

The both of us spent many nights reflecting at every single action of ours from an unbiased point of view; fully prepared to face our own weaknesses and to accept that we may have been the problem. However in a remarkable turn of events, what we found was that through the uncomfortable conversations with those who poked about the situation to us, we discovered evidences that lead to tons of proof that our words were manipulated in order for him to play the 'sympathy card' to borrow money from those that trusted him; using us as a scapegoat to his schemes. Those who feel victim to his stories started coming to us one by one, opening up about the situation and apologizing to us for having trusting him without confronting us.

Though it was nice to finally lay the situation to rest, what we learnt in the process was powerful beyond words. They say that every adversity leaves a lesson and a gift. Through this experience, we discovered the true meaning and importance of self-worth. We learnt how never to confuse or value the opinions of others, over our self-worth; as they were 2 completely different things.

We understood the power of what Oprah said, that "When someone shows you who they are the first time, believe them. Because if you don't and you decide to give them another chance, then it is no longer their fault for hurting you, because they have shown you who they were yet you chose to give them a chance." We learnt the importance of boundaries, expectations and self-love. We learnt the importance of being kind to ourselves and believing in who we truly are.

We realized that Life wasn't punishing us; instead Life was teaching us a way to Love and Trust ourselves so that we could share this message with you today. We realized that we were actually blessed with the experience, so that we could gain the wisdom to help others who may be suffering from the same circumstances.
