Story #019

"Growing up in a traditional Chinese family, as kids, we are often taught to be obedient; that the elders are always right, and that we should work to get a high position job that holds a respectable & professional title so that others can look up to us. In my family, we were often compared with our cousins in all aspects of life; like the results that we had in our school examinations, the talents that we possessed, our looks, the achievements that we got in competitions, our earnings and the list goes on...

To me, being graded on all those grounds only meant 1 thing, that I failed to be the one they can be proud of; the perfect daughter. Though that may be true, but I believe that everyone plays a different part in this world; a unique role, because we are all special...❤️

In my family, i was never the ‘good’ girl. I did not score good grades and achieved extraordinary things in local competitions. I grew up exploring things that were considered weird amongst my peers; often compared to for not having branded goods or getting the latest trends...

Personally i love spending my time in the wild outdoors; being a part of everything that's happening, chasing wild langurs(a type of monkey) or even running with them. People would often tell me that i shouldn't be doing these things as it is not what a girl should be doing. Some used to ridicule me for taking a bus to events, spending money just to work as a volunteer without earning anything in return. Though they too may be right, but it made me happy being a part of life, sharing precious moments with others...

Living with the judgements of society surely had its challenges, everything does; but it didn't stop me from chasing my wildest dreams. Up till today, i've happily worked as a nature educator; volunteered for local community awareness projects, camps & community events; doing things that kept me happy...

I adoreeeee Penang's culture and heritage; the traditions, the festivals and the togetherness that it brings; i just loveeeeeee being a part of this; a celebration of life...

Throughout my journey of 'running around', I've had the pleasure of meeting lots of people; people from different cultures, communities and heritage; people that helped me believe in the power of authenticity; people that helped me shine and be myself in a world plagued with 'fakery', especially in a social media era where we are afraid of not living up to the expectations of others...

My message to everyone is to just be you; even if it means breaking the conventional way of doing things. Be kind to everyone, ❤️ be love. Every choice that we make will always bring us valuable lessons in life. Live without regret, and always have faith, because the promise of life is filled with nothing but joy, growth and abundance; 🥰 and above all, never, ever, ever underestimate yourself...❤️
