"Good friends are like stars; you don't always see them but you know they are always there..."

Have you ever had a friendship where you felt like crossing the line that would make you more than friends? I know i have! I remember this time where I was always looking forward each day to meet her. We would sit and chat for hours, talking about our day and the experiences we've had.

Our friendship was so close that we even shared secrets about our partners; turning to each other for comfort when we get into a fight with our girlfriend or boyfriend. We were always there for one another throughout the good and bad times, protecting each other from pain and just being present whenever one of us needs a listening ear or a shoulder to cry on.

I remember thinking to myself that she is my best friend in the world and something didn't quite add up. I asked myself, why is it that when 2 people are so close, yet we choose not to be with each other despite all the external relationship problems that we have with our partners. Why is it that we only need to be friends when we can be so much more than that? 

This question gave me sleepless nights for a while, until one day, i decided  to try and take things to the next level. I told her about what i thought and felt and the possibilities of us sharing a life together. However as the conversation went on, things started to get weird. I sensed a chilly and still vibe in the air. She was quiet, confused and upset; because she did not feel the same about me...

As the days went on, things became more awkward. We stopped seeing each other like we used to, in hopes of healing the situation. However as time went by, we gradually stopped speaking to one another and before you know it, we became strangers again...

As days turned to months and months turned to years, we both went our separate ways. We got married, started a family and found steady jobs for ourselves. In a funny turn of events, almost a decade later, we met each by chance in a coffee shop. Living in different cities and all grown up, we started catching up with one another on our lives and the adventures that we had throughout the years...

It was a beautiful conversation that brought back so much memories from the past. Though we knew that deep inside, things could never be the same again, we felt that it wouldn't hurt to keep in touch every now and then...

Before we parted ways again, she told me that she sometimes wondered what life would be like for us if we took our relationship to the next level all those years ago. Though we can never turn back time, we decided to use whatever we have left and to treasure each moment again; as friends...

Sometimes in life we find ourselves in the crossroads of relationships. Some ends with a sweet memory while others not so. Regardless the ending, one thing is certain; if you've ever had the chance to experience friendship the way we have, you'll know that no matter how bad things get, or how far apart you are from each other, when it really matters, you will always be the first one waiting...
